    Daniel Smith's Undersea green is one of my favorites too and because it's made up using French ultramarine and Quinacridone gold, I always add those two colors first in any limited palette I create, just so I can make my own undersea green if I don't have palette space for any convenience colors. In my desk palette I currently have five convenience greens, which is a lot for me. Sap green, undersea and perylene green are my usual go to greens but I'm trying out a Serpentine stick and a tube of Cascade green at the moment. Both are granulating. The Serpentine is like a paler, yellower version of sap green with reddy brown speckles through it. The cascade green leans more towards being a darker turquoise green that separates into green and blue sort of like Schmincke's Shire blue. I don't have Shire blue so I'm just judging it from pictures online. Shire blue is a color I've wanted to try for a while, but now that I've got something similar, I haven't really found many places to use it. It's not really an urban sketch color for me, seascapes though would be good.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer 4 години тому

      I have the Serpentine, Cascade Green and Shire Blue in my large palette too. If I was home, I could do a side by side comparison of the last two for you. Even with painting seascapes quite a bit, I just don't use them much!

    You must not paint many evergreen forests since your greens almost all lean warm. I always have DS perylene green on my palette and could use DS' jadeite genuine a lot as well for all the deep bluey forest greens. Perylene green is a great mixer and can go cooler or darker-kind of impressive for what is actually a BLACK pigment; might be one to consider if you are looking for a green candidate to add.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer 7 годин тому

      I don't have any evergreen forests at all where I live/visit. I have a couple of Perylene Greens, plus Jadeite Genuine in my main palette, but they're just not accurate for what I see. I ought to try them in mixing more though, thanks for the reminder!

    Beautiful! I love how you use the colored pencils for detail I never realized that the neocolor II’s would soften with the heat,, but it makes sense being wax based. Usually I'm quite lazy and just use my pre-mixed greens, but French Ultramarine and Quin Gold/Deep Gold I like. I don't have it in my travel palette at the moment, but back at home I was playing around with mixes using PB60 (Indanthrone Blue) and it was making some gorgeous rich greens (and other colours) - if you've got one, I'd definitely recommend a play.

    Blitz is quite the attentive hostess. I do believe she wanted to be in the gouache/watercolor picture. No paint session is complete without the old paintbrush in the tea. I think it's somehow a rite of passage into the world of watercolor.😀 Thanks for sharing. Love to watch your splodge and scribble sessions.

    I bet your friend is absolutely thrilled with all the versions of their farmhouse! It's not often you get a "resident artist" in the house 😆. All three paintings have so much character. I wish I could loosen up like this. I'm all about the details when I absolutely don't mean to be. V frustrating. Also, still awaiting my Neocolour IIs from Amazon but I live in Australia and even in winter we're pretty warm so I'm wondering how they're going to go. Can't wait to try though 😃. Thanks for another one and keeping me entertained 👍🏻😎

      Haha! - the husband of the couple is a bit frustrated I'm doing them in sketchbooks instead of on loose paper so he could keep one! I still do struggle with the detail thing. Finding ways to limit how much detail I can add (time limit, large mediums, copying from something less detailed in the first place, doing the splodge later first) has helped me a bit though. It's the first time this happened to my Neocolors, and they were in full sun for quite a while. As soon as I moved to shade they improved, so I'd just say keep them in shade.

    LOL for the paintbrush accidentally ending up in your tea! But at least your bottom stayed dry painting on the blanket instead of trampoline 😂 I love that your vacation is a relaxed pace so you get lots of art time. My favorite is the last one with the gouache experiment.

    Helen, ever used acrylic as watercolour in Splodge and Scribble?

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer 3 дні тому

      I haven't done, no. I guess you'd have to water them down a lot so they don't resist the ink/pencil layer, or maybe use something like Flashe vinyl paint, which pencils can go over the top of. I might try it sometime!

    This was a great heads up for me regarding the neo colors melting and going sticky. Usually I'm only thinking about how my paint is drying too quickly in summer. I hate the summer heat here, especially when it's humid, so sticky me plus sticky art materials will only add to my hate of it 🥵😂I do really like the results you got though. Your gouache painting is lovely, I do think that a bit of urban sketching with gouache should be my next thing to try. Today I'm swatching all my gouache paints into my Nova book and it's actually quite nice outside today, if a little bit cold. I've just noticed one thing while swatching. I added a bit much water to my last color swatch (I forgot to wipe off the excess after I cleaned my brush), and when the water went through the page it activated the gouache on the other side too. I wish the Nova paper was as thick as the Beta paper. I know this is Sarah Burn's favorite gouache paper but it isn't mine so far 😂This might become a colored pencil, pastel pencil and charcoal book for me and my gouache will stay in my Beta book. I like using the calligraphy pen in the alpha book because of the contrast against the white paper but the right subject might look good on toned paper too 🤷‍♀

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer 3 дні тому

      Yes, the Beta paper is fabulous! I try to keep my gouache pretty dry, so hopefully it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I can see that the Nova is going to work beautifully with other media too though!!

  • @FaithAnnNB

    All 3 pieces turned out great! That gouache painting is quite impressive considering it wasn’t pure gouache and you had to mix every colour from watercolour. I wasn’t sure if the opacity would be lost too much. I’ve done the occasional watercolour + white gouache mixture when I’ve been doing a watercolour painting, so that I can get some lights on top, but I’ve never done an entire painting using white gouache and watercolour. Perfect for travelling light! I’ve never really thought about it, but didn’t realize you’d have to worry about melting neocolour ii’s!!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer 3 дні тому

      Thanks! The gouache is definitely better mixed with tube watercolour paint, but yes, I figured if I got the urge for gouache while away, this was better than nothing. I've also been recommending the white gouache + watercolour to people who are perhaps interested in trying out gouache, but don't want to invest in a load of tubes. I've never had the Neocolors melt before, but I did leave them in full sun. They became totally unworkable!
